District 6690 Projects
Exchange
HELP NEEDED FOR MALNOURISHED
PHILIPPINE KIDS
Dublin AM Rotary has sponsored a project in the Philippines
the last few years installing new deep water wells at several
elementary schools in order to provide the children with better
quality water to avoid diseases such as typhoid. Typhoid has
struck other children nearby. This is a joint project with
the Santa Rosa Rotary Club in the Philippines, located south of
Manila. In discussions with the Santa Rosa Club they
mentioned that they have another program to feed 200 malnourished
kids at one school. However, they only had enough funds to feed
50 out of 200 on a regular basis. Dublin AM had nothing in its
budget for this, but decided to send them $1,000 immediately to
help the 150 kids for a couple of months. Upon questioning, the
Santa Rosa Club indicated that it would take an additional
$2,600 to feed the 150 kids until the end of school in May 2009.
Having invested $11,000 in the wells and food over the past two
years, and operating with a tight budget, Dublin AM is hoping
that there are other clubs in District 6690 that can help
feed these malnourished kids for the remainder of the school year
by contributing $500 or $1000 to this effort. Interested
clubs can contact Scott Williamson of Dublin AM via e-mail at
swilliamson@att.net or via telephone at 614 798-1792.

Governor Tom's Notes
What a great Foundation and
Membership Seminar on October 18 at the Cherry Valley Lodge.
My sincere thank you to all who made it happen. I started to list
those who planned and participated in the program but realized the
list was too extensive for the newsletter. Also, there are so many
I would likely miss someone and that would not be good. I
would suggest however, that you reference pages 60 through 66 of
the district directory to see the very capable and service oriented
Rotarians who keep our clubs, international service and Foundation
support and services going here in District 6690.
Equally important is that I thank all of you who attended the seminars.
This was the best attended seminar in recent history. I am
appreciative, of course, to all the Rotarians who worked so hard to
get the word out however, I think the good attendance is an
indication of the mood of our district Rotarians and Clubs.
Observing the very well done sessions, I observed great enthusiasm,
motivation and a thirst to know more about how to bring in and keep
members, gain financial support for the Foundation's humanitarian
efforts and how to access the grants and scholarship programs to
better serve through Rotary. If you missed this seminar you missed
a great Rotary experience. You will get your chance again
next year.
Thank you,
Governor Tom

Traveling the District
The Granville Club, under the leadership of Tony
Beckerly, has always had a great mix of community and international
projects. The club was the birth place of the District 6690
Operation Smile Service Project. Doug Barno, Granville
Rotarian and others did the first project in the Philippines and
the rest is history. Thousands of children have been given a new
chance at life all around the world since then. Thank you
Doug and Granville Rotarians for your passionate support of this
project and all the others you do.
The Reynoldsburg/Pickerington Rotary Club conducts a very
successful and well organized fundraiser/auction/social event they
dub the "Big Give". It raises money to pay for
their service projects but also makes for a great social event.
The club is also sponsoring a new Rotary Club in Canal
Winchester. Reynoldsburg/Pickerington Rotarian Brad Tharp is
heading up the Canal Winchester extension. Please contact him if
there is someone in the Canal Winchester area you think may enjoy
Rotary. Good job President Ron Stoke, you have a lot going on
this year.
The Westerville Sunrise Club, the home of the Wendy's Chili Open,
has a well rounded menu of service projects serving both the
Westerville and world community. A special thank you to this
club for helping the Lancaster Rotary Club plan the successful
assembly last April and the 2009 District Conference coming up next
May. This type of cooperation and support between clubs is
great and to borrow from Woody Hayes (in Rotary) "you can't
pay back but you can pay forward". The Westerville
Sunrise had an interesting song which applied to my interest in old
cars. However, I believe the Merry Oldsmobile may need a
"tune up". I really enjoyed my visit and the
Westerville Sunrise Rotarians, under the leadership of President
Larry Jenkins are an engaged bunch of dedicated Rotarians.
I enjoyed a great homecoming visit to my home club, The Lancaster
Rotary Club. This was the first meeting at our new location,
the Eagles on East Main Street in Lancaster. President Martin
Barker and his decorating committee arranged a beautifully
decorated meeting venue to greet members on the first meeting at
our new home. I am most grateful to the Lancaster Rotarians
for their support of me as District Governor. Conference
chair, Lou Varga and a large committee made up of many Lancaster,
Lancaster Sherman, and Baltimore Rotarians are busy planning a
great District Conference celebration for May 2009 and want you all
to come to Lancaster to celebrate Rotary.
St. Clairsville is a unique and beautiful town with a great quality
of life and a gorgeous courthouse. It also has two Rotary
Clubs, the noon St. Clairsville Club lead by President Amy Roberts
and the St. Clairsville Sunrise with Dick Steele, President.
These clubs each have about 50 members in a town of approximately
4,000. These clubs are friendly competitors and have a lot of
fun improving lives in St. Clairsville, Belmont County and the
world. Thanks Amy, Dick and St. Clairsville Rotarians for your
Belmont County hospitality and all you do in the name of
Rotary.
I visited the Gallipolis Club ice cream booth at the Bob Evans
Festival. They even let me scoop ice cream for a while,
however, they watched me closely so I did not eat their
profits. The booth is in a large tent and one side is a
booster group selling apple dumplings and on the other side a group
selling pies. The Gallipolis Rotarians sold cones and dishes
but also did a land office business topping the dumplings and
pies. Doris and I had a great time and it was a good Family
of Rotary event. Also, the Gallipolis Rotarians were wearing
Rotary identification and projected a great image for Rotary to the
many people from Gallipolis and around the state enjoying the
festival.
The Capitol Square Club is a great and innovative club who serves
Rotary with passion and is not afraid to think outside the
box. I was invigorated by the young, bright members who are
approaching Rotary service in a way which gives me insight into the
future. Lead by Keith Schuss, they passionately supported Via
Colori, a street art festival in Columbus. This is the home
club of Gary Vaughan our District Water Resource chair and it is
not surprising that Capitol Square is supporting and volunteering
for many water initiatives in Honduras. Good going Capitol
Square, keep up the good work.
The Upper Arlington Club is an older well established club with a
great program of community and international service. Upper
Arlington has been the home club of three Past District Governors,
all of who have been role models for me, George Renkert, Mike
Knilaus and Dick Slager. Under the leadership of President
Tom McClain, The club maintains a great classification mix
and has been adding new members and young blood, both of which bode
well for the future of the club. The club is doing so many
good things it's impossible to list, however, one major emphasis is
a partnership with the West BroadStreet Elementary School.
This was the elementary school that PDG and Past RI Director Dick
Slager attended. The club tutors, donates supplies, provides
role models and really makes a difference to the kids on West Broad
Street.
The Zanesville Daybreak Club under the leadership of
President John Patterson, is well organized and service oriented.
Their projects are many, however, the miracle league baseball field
for children with physical or mental challenges is a key
project. A district simplified grant was used to fund
bleachers for the field. But what really encouraged me was
how the enthusiasm and support of the club has helped other
non-Rotary volunteers come together to support the field with their
time and resources. The Daybreak Club is also sponsoring
billboards around the city using donated (unsold) spots on
electronic billboards. A really first class and economical
way to get Rotary in front of the community. I encourage you
to call President John if you would like more information on this
great PR idea.
Hillard, the home club of PDG George Hale and under the leadership
of President Steve Hughes strongly supports the teenagers in their
area. Although they have a wide array of services, they
support the Davidson and Darby Schools by refreshing their
landscaping. Their support of Interact and sponsorship of a four
way speech contest is outstanding.
The Portsmouth Rotary club meets on the Campus of the Shawnee State
College right on the banks of the Ohio River. The Portsmouth
downtown, including the campus area is very beautiful with well
kept buildings and gorgeous murals. President Stephanie Neff
is doing a member survey to determine the likes and needs of the
members to enhance programming and develop an expanded committee
structure. Good effort to keep the membership engaged.
The Zanesville Rotary holds a quarterly social function from 5:30
to 7:30 p.m. at the Market House in downtown Zanesville as a
family of Rotary event. This event together with their 12
days of Christmas Raffle gives ample opportunity for the club to
enjoy fellowship and camaraderie. Speaking of Christmas, on
December 9, the Zanesville Rotary will host a Christmas party for
children with developmental disabilities. They will serve
pizza to the kids and Santa will visit to bring gifts.
President Terry and Zanesville Rotarians, this is a great way to
share the Christmas season.
I enjoyed a pleasant visit with the Olentangy Club and President
Nancy Shapiro, ADG Lee Smith, ADG Bryan Cochran (who is a member of
Olentangy). All the Olentangy Rotarians were very
hospitable. They had a new member, Jan Simons, to
induct. Jan was a Rotary member in Northern Ohio and found
the club through their website. We also made James Loseth a
Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his support of the
Foundation. I was very impressed that the club, with the guidance
of Mike Brown, has adopted the new leadership plan. They have
their committees well organized to fulfill the four avenues of
service while spreading out the workload where everyone knows what
they are to do and no one is overwhelmed. They also have their
leadership identified well in advance so they can receive proper
support and orientation. If anyone is thinking about
reviewing your leadership plan, I would suggest contacting the
Olentangy Club or e-mail me and we can get you in contact with
Mike.
Thank you all for everything,

Presidential Citation
Requirements
Since one quarter of our year is behind us, I thought it might
be handy to review the requirements for the Presidential
Citation. The Citation is a wonderful way to thank your
club's members for the work they have done in the year at hand,
and to reinforce their pride in being a Rotarian.
To qualify for a citation, each club
must:
1.
Initiate a service project that will
reduce child mortality.
2.
Achieve a net increase of one member by
March 31, 2009 (Suggested goal: Achieve a net membership increase
of 10%.
3.
Complete at least one activity from the
lists in the Presidential Citation Brochure, for each of the five
service categories (Membership, Club, Vocational, Community, and
International).
The scope of the activities should be in
proportion to the number of Rotarians in your club.
Requirements
must be met, and the certification form submitted to the District
Governor, by March 31, 2009.
Certification
form at http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/900b_en08.pdf

Four Avenues
of Service Awards
Presidents and
board members, I hope your club will consider recognizing one of
your members this year with the Four Avenues of Service
award. This award is given to recognize a club member for his
or her outstanding efforts in all the four Rotary avenues of service
- club, community, international, and vocational. The
nominating form can be found at:
www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/award_fouraves.pdf
After you've sent the nomination in, RI will forward
to you a certificate to be given to the recipient. This is a
very meaningful way to bring recognition to a deserving club
member. Contact Kurt Dailey, Recognition chair (Page 61 directory).

November is Rotary Foundation Month, the time we focus on all
the fantastic projects Rotarians do with the help of Foundation
grants. District 6690 Rotarians generously donated $262,000
to our Foundation last year, and those contributions enabled our
Clubs to show Service Above Self throughout not only our District
but around the world. This article highlights the service
projects conducted by District 6690 through the use of grants made
possible by your donations to the Annual Fund. These grants
include the District Simplified Grants (DSG), the Matching Grants
(MG), and Volunteer Service Grants (VSG).
Our District was allocated $24,962 for District
Simplified Grants for Rotary Year 2008-2009. These grants
support short-term humanitarian service projects in clubs' local
communities, and are not used for international service projects.
Matching Grants support Rotary Clubs and Districts as
they work with international partners to address humanitarian
conditions that benefit communities in need. Our
District has had strong participation in this program this year.
Our District is very active in the grants program and
provides significant financial support to our District Clubs for
both local and international service projects and we strive to
maximize the use of the donations that are given by our District
Rotarians during the annual fund drive. But it all starts
with Rotarians who generously contribute to our Foundation. THANK
YOU!!!!!!!
The job of the District Foundation Team is to help
all of you reach your Foundation giving goals. One of the
most effective ways for us to do this is to bring the message of
the Foundation to you personally. All of us on the District Foundation
Team would love to have the opportunity to speak to your Clubs
about the wonderful things that Our Rotary Foundation is doing and
how you can be a part of it. Please consider having a meeting
dedicated to the Foundation and asking Brent Rosenthal, District
Foundation Chair; Tara Craaybeek, Annual Giving Chair; or PDG Luke
McCormick, Permanent Fund Chair (see Directory page 65 for contact
information) to come speak to your Club.
